The Government of Ecuador announced this Monday that it maintains an epidemiological surveillance process active, especially on the southern border, following Peru declared an emergency situation last weekend due to the increase “unusual” of Guillain Barré syndrome cases.

The Ecuadorian Ministry of Health indicated that, in order to identify cases of said disease, provide immediate medical attention and find out the possible origin of this disease, it maintains active epidemiological surveillance, especially in the border area with Peru.

According to the Ecuadorian Health portfolio, 165 cases of patients with the syndrome have already been reported in Peru, as well as four deaths from this disease so far this year.

Although the cause of the disease is unknown, its contagion is usually related to the consumption of food infected with the bacteria. “Campylobacter jejuni”among other gastrointestinal pathogens, the Ministry specified.

He mentioned that this disease causes weakness in the legs and arms with an intensity that can range from mild to severe.

At the moment, 22 cases have been confirmed in Ecuador between January and May, which represents a “expected trend” compared to reports from previous years.

In addition, no patients with this disease have been registered in the country in the last three weeks, the source said.

The Ministry, especially in the border area, has developed various actions such as the dissemination among health personnel of diagnostic and treatment lines for cases of Guillain Barré syndrome.

In addition, it has supplied immunoglobulins and other treatments, such as plasmapheresis, to health care services, especially in the care units of the Ministry at the national level.

It also maintains the Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance plan in order to preserve the eradication of poliomyelitis and also allows the detection of possible cases of Guillain Barré syndrome.

The Ministry has also strengthened vaccination once morest poliomyelitis and has launched a program to disseminate recommendations for the population.

The ministry has recommended that citizens clean their hands following using the bathroom, wash food before eating it, drink safe water and see a doctor in the presence of symptoms such as weakness or tingling in the arms and legs.

Given the increase “unusual” of cases in Peru, the Government of that country declared a health emergency situation last Saturday for 90 days, to guarantee the supply of pharmaceutical products and reinforce the surveillance and investigation of the disease.
