Zulia Medical Guild demanded procedural respect for detained doctors

This Saturday, April 2, in the state of Zulia, the College of Physicians ruled on the case of surgeons arrested for malpractice following leaving surgical scissors in the body of a 54-year-old patient who died in the University Hospital of Maracaibo.

The union members rejected the arrest and demanded respect for due process with an investigation into the man’s cause of death. They alleged that the patient had “an infectious inflammatory process due to intestinal diverticulitis. A fact that in itself can lead to generalized sepsis.”

Faced with such a situation, the doctors detained by local authorities respond to the names of: Luis Gomez, Gerardo Núñez and Evert Colina.

“Until now there is no investigation or scientific certainty that can directly blame colleagues, attributing the cause of death to the surgical object, a process of defamation, persecution and even arrest of these colleagues was unfolded.” This was stated by the College of Physicians in a statement.

“Despite the adverse conditions in which they work, they decided to give the indicated and effective surgical solution to the pathology presented by the patient, resulting in this unfortunate incident.” They added so in the writing.

In it, they highlighted the prestige, recognition and conduct of the doctors accused of malpractice, “with knowledge and expertise in their specialty. In addition, lecturers in the art of surgery, which until now had been practiced without any incidents”.

They also highlighted that these “similar cases have been reported and resolved with a second intervention in the scientific literature. Evidencing that there is no lethal cause-effect relationship.

“Because of the foregoing, and because of the sobriety that always characterizes this institution, we demand that the authorities, civil, criminal, and military, carry out the necessary investigation processes, under presentation. Respecting their civil and human rights”, concluded the union.
