Guild master remains optimistic for Pongau’s construction industry

Across Austria, the order situation in the construction industry has recently deteriorated. State guild master Peter Dertnig, managing director of Wagrain Bau, still paints a positive picture of the situation in Pongau.

“The economic situation has certainly been better for our industry. But overall we are complaining at a very high level,” says Peter Dertnig, Managing Director of Wagrain Bau and State Building Guild Master in the Chamber of Commerce, summarizing his view of things.

“Tourists continue to invest”

The builder admits that residential construction orders are declining. In Salzburg, this particularly affects companies in the outer mountains. “Here in Pongau the situation is less dramatic,” explains Dertnig. “Tourists continue to invest. This year there was a lot of construction, especially in Grossarl, but things were quieter in the Tauern region. There are already plans for projects there that will be implemented in the next few years,” the entrepreneur is convinced.

Overall, there has recently been a reluctance to tender for new projects. The new construction boom is definitely over, but: “There are still orders and it must be emphasized that the starting point of the last few years, with which the situation is now compared, was extremely good,” Dertnig further points out. The guild master is generally in favor of a more optimistic view of things: “I also don’t understand individual colleagues from other federal states who paint such a black picture in the media.”

No rapid increase in unemployment

In any case, Dertnig does not expect major job cuts in the domestic construction industry. It expects a shift towards more civil engineering, conversion and renovation projects. “It is quite possible that some companies that were not well positioned before Corona are now stumbling,” he adds.

Thomas Burgstaller, head of the employment service in Bischofshofen, also does not expect a rapid increase in the unemployment rate in the construction industry. “There are still a lot of vacancies and the prospects in Pongau are not that bad,” he says. Although unemployment is expected to rise in the next few months, “but it probably won’t be a steep upward curve,” says Burgstaller, summarizing the situation.
