Casas das Rosas reopened after two years of restoration and Antonio Sarasá himself, responsible for the restoration, took me on a guided tour and told me all the details of this project.

Elements that recall the original appearance of different rooms in the house were recovered. One of the interesting points highlighted by Toninho was the revelation of original wallpapers from the first construction. Many were reproduced or replicated, but one of the originals was completely restored, retouched by hand.

A series of adjustments were made to the building, such as the installation of an access ramp to the museum and the adaptation of the bathroom on the ground floor for people with reduced mobility. In addition, tactile flooring and double metal handrails were installed throughout the spaces, signs with Braille inscription were positioned on the stairs and signage for people with low vision was added to the floors.

The building that houses Casa das Rosas is an example of early 20th century architecture, and its name is a reference to the rose garden that originally existed on the site. The house was built in 1935 by Francisco de Paula Ramos de Azevedo, a renowned architect from the coffee period in São Paulo.

Casa das Rosas was inhabited for the first 51 years of its existence. First, it was the residence of one of Ramos de Azevedo’s daughters, Lúcia Ramos de Azevedo, and her husband, Ernesto Dias de Castro. The place remained as a residence until 1986, when it was expropriated by the Government of the State of São Paulo with the aim of preserving the place.

In 1991, the year of the Avenida’s centenary, the mansion was listed, in an unprecedented act in Brazil, as cultural heritage. In 2004, it was reopened as Espaço Haroldo de Campos, in honor of the Brazilian writer and poet. The name-homage suggests what the house’s attractions are about: lots of reading and poetry.
