Co-founder and director of Global Programs of the company New Sun Road Guatemala, S.A.the Guatemalan Susana Arrechea won the Princess of Girona Award in the category CreaEmpresa.

Arrachea is a Guatemalan scientist who graduated from the San Carlos University of Guatemala with a degree in Chemical Engineering. She obtained a master’s degree and doctorate in Spain in Nanotechnology and solar approach.

With his company, Arrachea implements Digital Community Centers in different rural communities without access to energy. These projects help promote access to solar energy, internet connectivity, and training in Mayan languages.

Besides, New Sun Road Guatemala, S.A. To date, it has benefited more than four thousand people directly and facilitates more than 14 thousand digital services, with the vision of expanding to other countries in the future.

This award seeks to reward the capacity for achievement and improvement of young Ibero-Americans up to 35 years old in the development of projects, businesses and scientific research capable of creatively promoting positive changes in society.

The event was held at the La Nave innovation center in Madrid Spain and was chaired by King Felipe VI. The jury of the event decided to recognize Arrechea’s career for “being a co-founder of the company New Sun Road Guatemala “which contributes to electrification, connectivity and digital literacy for indigenous women in rural communities in Guatemala and for its work in the education of girls and young women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers,” they mentioned at the event.

In her acceptance speech, Susana Arrechea encouraged the young scientists because “Everything has its season and we must not let anyone extinguish that passion for achieving the impossible,” she commented.
