The Ministry of Culture reported the death of scientist Alfredo MacKenney, who in life was a prominent multifaceted researcher and scientist, a doctor and surgeon who graduated from the University of San Carlos of Guatemala.

He was also a volcanologist and expert in pre-Hispanic heritage, and dedicated his life to researching and documenting the history of Guatemala.

“Guatemala has lost one of its most distinguished scientists. We express our most sincere condolences to his family and friends for such an irreparable loss,” the Ministry of Culture added.

Dr. MacKenney’s life highlights his studies on volcanology; for this reason he is admired by Guatemalan and foreign scientists, who have cited him in various studies for his contributions to research.

MacKenney dedicated himself to studying and documenting the natural phenomena of the Pacaya Volcano, to which he has recorded more than 1,400 ascents.

He also made models of archaeological sites in Guatemala (Tikal, Quiriguá, Ceibal, Zaculeu, Iximché and Piedras Negras, among others).

Many of his creations are part of the collections of several foreign museums and museums around the country, such as the model of Zaculeu that is exhibited at the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology of Guatemala.
