Guatemalan referees called up for a 2024 Copa America semi-final

On the one hand, the current champion Argentina will face the only “living” representative of CONCACAF, the Canadian National Team, on Tuesday, July 9 at MetLife Stadium (New Jersey) and on the other, Uruguay and Colombia will meet at Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte) on Wednesday, July 10.

These two matches will be key to determining the final positions in the tournament that spanned the length and breadth of the United States for almost a month, and at least one of them will have Guatemalans present since Mario Escobar and Humberto Panjoj are part of the refereeing team.

Guatemalan referees have been a constant presence in the current 2024 Copa América, as this will be the third time they have been appointed to be present at a match.

Guatemalan referees in Uruguay vs Colombia

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), organizer of the Copa América, announced on its website the official appointments of referees for the semi-finals of the tournament and the Guatemalan presence will be in the match between Uruguay and Colombia.

Mario Escobar, who was a centre-back in two matches, received his third call-up but on this occasion he will be the fourth referee for Mexican César Ramos, who will be the main referee, assisted by his compatriots Alberto Morín and Marco Bisguerra.

For his part, Humberto Panjoj, who suffered from heat stroke during Guatemala’s first refereeing session at the Copa América, is now once once more authorized by Conmebol to referee and will be the fifth player in Uruguay vs Colombia.

Along with Escobar and Panjoj, the other Guatemalan referee present at the 2024 Copa América is Luis Ventura, who served as Mario’s assistant in the two matches he officiated as a center back.
