The index annually evaluates the situation for journalists in 180 countries, measuring five indicators: political, social, economic, legal framework and security.

As the report highlights, in the Americas region, The inability of journalists to cover stories related to organized crime, corruption or the environment, for fear of reprisals, is a problem of the first magnitude.

Guatemala’s position is below Colombia, ranked 119, and Mexico at 121. El Salvador is ranked 133. The location of the Guatemalan nation in the ranking places it six positions away from being among the countries in a “very serious situation”, grouping it with nations from the Middle East and North Africa, being the lowest part of the classification.

In this last group are the areas marked in red such as the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Palestine and Iraq. Also in that section are countries such as Venezuela, Russia, Nicaragua, Cuba and North Korea.
