Guatemalan Gilberto Lemus shines with a medal in Venezuela and dreams of Paris 2024

Gilberto’s dedication, effort and talent have been recognized once again, placing Guatemala’s name high on the world sports scene.“, expressed the Facebook profile of Fedepesas Guatemala, where it was announced that the athlete Gilberto Lemus won a bronze medal in the Pan American Pre-Olympic Weightlifting Championship, which took place in Caracas, Venezuela from February 23 to 28.
Lemus, who competed against athletes from Colombia, Peru and Mexico, earned his place on the podium by reaching a mark of 358 kilograms in the +109 kg category in snatch.
After his celebration, the Guatemalan shared his opinion about the result achieved, not hiding his happiness since this event was part of his goal, which is to achieve a place for the Paris Olympic Games.
“I am happy for the medal I got in Venezuela. It is not only a personal achievement, but for my family and the country. The main objective is to achieve the Olympic place, but there is still a long way to go”he shared.
“With the Pan American I would be almost completing the qualification process for the Olympics. In March I will go to the world championship in Thailand, which would be the last competition to accumulate points.”said the athlete.
When the World Cup ends next month, Lemus said that a points count will be carried out that will determine the places for the Olympic Games.
Lemus competed in the last Santiago 2023 Pan American Games as an independent athlete, following the suspension of the Guatemalan Olympic Committee that is in force by the International Olympic Committee.
At the San Salvador 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games, Lemus won two silver medals and helped in the overall medal table of Guatemalan athletes who participated under the name Centro Caribe Sports.
