The Government of Guatemala reported this Sunday that they detained almost 350 irregular migrants in the northeast of the territory, who will soon be expelled to Honduras.

The Guatemalan Institute of Migration detailed to journalists that the migrants were detected in the early hours of this Sunday in the department (province) of Izabal, 250 kilometers northeast of Guatemala City.

The detainees “do not meet the immigration requirements” to enter and remain in Guatemala, so “the safe return to the border of origin” of the migrants, in this case Honduras, is coordinated, the same source said.

Similarly, the travelers “were provided with humanitarian and medical assistance” for those who required it, pointed out the Guatemalan Institute of Migration, without further details on the nationality of the migrants.

However, the majority of migrants who cross Guatemala by land come from Honduras, Venezuela, Cuba and Haiti, according to official figures, and most of them seek to reach the United States to have better living conditions.

This week, the US ambassador to Guatemala, William Popp, met with local immigration authorities to discuss the current situation of thousands of Venezuelans trying to cross the Central American country.

The Guatemalan Institute of Migration detailed on Friday in a press release that its director, Stuard Rodríguez, had an appointment with Popp and “representatives of US agencies in Guatemala.”

During the meeting, local authorities presented the “current situation of migratory flows in the country.”

The meeting took place in the framework of the “increase in people of Venezuelan nationality transiting irregularly through the territory,” according to the press release from the Guatemalan Institute of Migration.

Last Wednesday, around 400 migrants, mostly Venezuelans, were stranded at a bus station in Guatemala where they denounced high charges for foreigners in local transport.
