GUATEMALA (EFE).— As of Friday, the rainy season in Guatemala has caused the deaths of at least 10 people and the flooding of several communities on the southern coast of the country, according to official sources.
The deaths were caused by landslides, floods, overflowing rivers and other incidents that occurred in the departments of Suchitepéquez, San Marcos, Guatemala Quiché and Jalapa, according to the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred).
One of the most recent fatal incidents occurred on Thursday night, when a landslide claimed the lives of a woman and a minor who were traveling in their vehicle in the department of San Marcos, in the west of the country.
During the rainy season, which began 15 days ago, nearly 2.5 million people have been affected across the country.
Yesterday, Friday, in different villages in the department of Santa Rosa, on the southern coast of Guatemala, flooding was reported on the main streets, forcing residents to travel on boats on the sidewalks, while access to businesses and homes was partially blocked by water.
The flooding in this region of the country is due to the overflow of the Los Esclavos River, which flows into the Pacific Ocean and is 145 kilometers long.
The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh) says that Guatemala is affected by a climatic phenomenon originating in the Gulf of Mexico and that in the next 48 hours it might become a tropical cyclone.
