Guatemala and Costa Rica play for the honor of third place in the Futsal World Cup

Guatemala and Costa Rica fell in the semifinals of the Concacaf Futsal Pre-World Cup against Panama and Cuba and will play for the honor of third place in a duel that is marked by the rivalry between both teams.
On Thursday, April 18, Costa Rica took to the court at the Alexis Argüello Sports Center in Nicaragua with the intention of claiming the Concacaf Futsal Championship title for the fourth consecutive time, but its aspiration was cut short by the Cuban National Team since the latter won 7-6 on penalties after tying 3-3 in regular time.
A similar situation happened to the Guatemalan National Team as they were beaten 6-3 by Panama in extra time and were left out of the title race.
After these results, it was established that Cuba and Panama will fight to be the new Concacaf champion while Costa Rica and Guatemala will compete for third place.
Rivalry dominated by Costa Rica
The match for third place in the 2024 Cocacaf Futsal World Cup will be the third in history between Guatemala and Costa Rica. Until now it is the Costa Rican team that dominates the duel against the blue and white with two victories.
The first time they saw each other’s faces was in 2012 when they met in the final and the score was 3-2 in favor of Costa Rica.
Four years later (2016) they met again but this time it was in the semifinals. On this occasion The result was less close and Costa Rica beat Guatemala 7-1 to advance to the final.
For the blue and white, this match will be the opportunity to break this superiority, in addition to the fact that they could achieve their third bronze medal in the World Cup after those achieved in 2016 and 2021.
Costa Rica, for its part, has been third place on one occasion. In 2004, the Costa Rican team beat Mexico 12-5 to win bronze.
