The governments of Guatemala and Colombia signed this Thursday, April 4, a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in security and institutional strengthening, which, in the opinion of authorities, was carried out within the framework of “strengthening inter-institutional relations and international cooperation.”

The memorandum was signed by the Minister of the Interior of Guatemala, Francisco Jiménez, and the Minister of National Defense of Colombia, Iván Velásquez.

“The agreement of this day contributes to the planning, development and execution of policies for the exchange of experiences and cooperation between security institutions. It seeks to establish the bases for police technical cooperation and mutual support in the transfer of information and intelligence on the illicit trafficking of drugs, firearms, ammunition and explosives. In addition, support in education, police careers, training and training,” the Government said in a statement.

The document adds that, according to the signed document, the coordination and monitoring of activities by Guatemala will be in charge of the Fifth Vice Ministry of the Ministry of the Interior, while, by Colombia, through the Area of ​​International Relations and Cooperation of the Police of the National Police.

It also points out that the execution and operationalization of the work will be in charge of the General Directorate of the PNC of Guatemala and the Police Intelligence Directorate of the National Police of Colombia.

It details that the commitment establishes the process exchange mechanism to improve the performance, respect and promotion of human rights by police institutions.

“It also addresses issues related to the transfer of security technology and the reciprocity of practical experiences, advice and support in information and communications technologies,” the statement says.

Said memorandum will be valid for five years, “automatically renewable for an equal period or as long as the authorities agree.”

“The Mingob is committed to strengthening the operational and technical capabilities of the public force to preserve the peace and security of all citizens,” the statement concludes.
