“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” was the highest-grossing movie this weekend in the United States, taking in $114 million, according to estimates released Sunday.
The film, directed by James Gunn, was shown in 4,450 theaters.
Internationally, where the film opened in 51 territories excluding China, “Guardians of the Galaxy” earned $168 million, leaving it with a global opening of $282 million.
In America, that’s an impressive figure, but a little less than what’s expected from a Marvel release. On the same weekend last year, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” fueled by the success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” earned $187.4 million in its first three days. And in November, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” opened with $181.3 million.
For its part, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” opened with just over 106 million dollars to 474 million worldwide. Shazam! Fury of the Gods” grossed $133.4 million.
“Guardians Vol. 3” knocked “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” out of first place, which had been there for four weeks.
The next release for a superhero movie is “The Flash,” which opens on June 16.
“Guardians Vol. 3” stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel. Criticism has generally been good, but it’s been more mixed than previous versions. And it is difficult to compare it with premieres made before the pandemic, such as “Vol. 2” which earned $146 million in May 2017.
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” added another $18.6 million in its fifth weekend to move into second place, bringing its domestic total to $518.1 million. Globally, it has now surpassed $1.1 billion.
Third is “Evil Dead Rise” with $5.7 million and fourth is “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” with 3.4 million.
The romantic comedy “Love Again” (by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, with Celine Dion and new songs) earned $2.4 million and ranked fifth when it opened in 2,703 theaters. —- Lindsey Bahr on Twitter: www.twitter.com/ldbahr.
