A solemn mass in honor of Saint Peter in the cathedral of La Guaira was officiated by Monsignor Raúl Biord Castillo, as bishop of La Guaira, and who was recently appointed by Pope Francis as archbishop of Caracas.
Monsignor Biord was accompanied at the solemn Eucharist by Monsignor Enrique Parravano, bishop of Maracay.
The Eucharist, in addition to commemorating the patron saint of La Guaira, also served to celebrate the ordination of two new priests who will perform duties in the Maiquetía and Tarmas parishes, in Carayaca.
The diocesan mass remembered the 435 years of the founding of the town of La Guaira and served to honor Saint Peter the Apostle, its patron.
Once the Eucharistic celebration was over, the brotherhoods of San Pedro de La Guaira danced to the saint and went up to the upper part, in the Puente de Jesús sector, where every year the drumbeat is performed until nightfall.
The fact that the majority of these brothers are women stands out, who dance to the rhythm of the Sangueo to San Pedro. One of them is Fanny Batista who, for many years, has carried Saint Peter from the cathedral to Puente de Jesús.
Naiguata. The Naiguatareños celebrated Saint Peter to the rhythm of “Saint John left, Saint Peter arrived and next year both will return.” This is how they paraded the image of the saint guarded by José Longa.
The image toured the streets of Pueblo Arriba, following the mass, and later went to the Corros family home, where they keep Saint John. Both saints met in the middle of the drum beat.
