Guadalajara to Welcome a Unique Tennis League in the Coming Year

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) — A unique tennis league born during the pandemic is coming to Mexico for the first time. The Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS), created by coach Patrick Mouratoglou, will be in the western city of Guadalajara next year, organizers said Sunday.

Mouratoglou, who for many years managed American star Serena Williams, created the new tennis league in 2020, when professional tournaments were halted by the coronavirus pandemic.

“It is an innovative tournament with eight players participating over four days in an innovative format,” said Gustavo Santoscoy García, of GS Sports Management, the organizing company. “For this first edition we have confirmed Nick Kyrgios, Casper Ruud, Denis Shapolavov and Flavio Cobolli.”

The tournament will be held from February 14 to 16, 2025 at the Pan American Tennis Center in Guadalajara and will award a prize pool of 1.4 million dollars, 420 thousand of which will go to the winning tennis player.

The UTS began to be held without spectators in France in June 2020 when the WTA and ATP tournaments were halted due to the pandemic. Since then, tournaments have been held in different parts of the world, but not in Latin America.

“Guadalajara will be the first Latin American country where we go, we already tested the concept in Europe and the United States and we needed to come to this region where the fans are fantastic,” said Mouratoglou. “I know they already have a WTA tournament (in Guadalajara) and now we will bring them men’s tennis with great personalities.”

The league uses different rules to conventional tennis, including that four quarters of eight minutes each are played, players wear microphones so that what they say can be heard, and spectators can make as much noise as they want during the matches.

“Tennis fans are getting older and that is a problem for the sport. Tennis is the best sport in the world, but people under 40 do not follow it, people consume sports differently than we did,” added the coach.

This season, Andrey Rublev won a tournament in Oslo, Gael Monfils was crowned champion in New York before the US Open and the next stop is Frankfurt in October with a final scheduled to take place in London in December.
