GTA 6 will not be affected by the actors’ strike

One of the most anticipated games of the decade is, without a doubt, GTA 6, the next open-world game from Rockstar Games that has a release window scheduled for 2025.

Following the recent declaration of a strike by Video game actors who are part of SAG-AFTRA which began on July 26, the development of the next Grand Theft Auto would be affected. However, the American actors’ union has declared that this will not happen.

According to him Kotaku reporter Ethan Gacha representative said that artists working on the game are allowed to continue working on the project.

At this time, it’s unknown which artists are involved in the game, as outside of fans trying to figure out the vocal talents of GTA 6’s two main characters, little is known about the game’s wider cast.

But… What is the reason for the strike that could have affected GTA 6?

The trigger for the strike was AI protections for voice actors and voice actors. According to members of the negotiating committee on behalf of the actors, they believe that video game studios do not want to protect their actors from potential exploitation that exists with AI.

“We will not agree to a contract that allows companies to abuse AI to the detriment of our members. Enough is enough. When these companies get serious about offering a deal that our members can live and work under, we will be here, ready to negotiate,” SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher said in a statement.

“Frankly, it’s shocking that these video game studios haven’t learned anything from the lessons of the past year: that our members can and want to stand up and demand fair and equitable treatment with respect to AI, and the public supports us in that,” said SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.

SAG-AFTRA had been in negotiations with several video game companies and their acting production divisions since October 2022, including Activision Productions, Blindlight, Disney Character Voices, EA Productions, Formosa Interactive, Insomniac Games, Epic Games, Take 2 Productions, VoiceWorks Productions and WB Games.

Those companies will now likely be unable to hire unionized actors to perform motion capture or voice-over work for their games until the reason for the strike is resolved.
