The franchise Grand Theft Auto is one of the most popular in the world of video games. His latest opus, Grand Theft Auto 5experienced enormous success upon its release in 2013 and propelled the series to incredible heights by breaking numerous sales records not only in gaming, but in entertainment itself.
It’s not for nothing that the next chapter of Rockstar Games’ game is so anticipated. And after ten long years, players’ patience will soon be rewarded with a brand new grandiose game.
The problem? We know so little about GTA 6. In fact, we don’t even know if the game will actually be called GTA 6; it is only a fictitious title agreed upon within the gaming community and in the media.
Because we can’t wait as much as our readers to see what the universe of the next one GTA has in store for us, we’ve taken a look at the confirmed news, rumors and leaks to get an idea of what’s coming.
The unveiling of GTA 6
It’s confirmed by Rockstar, the “next” Grand Theft Auto will have a first trailer early in December.
Our optimism is, however, realistic: it could just be a “teaser”. We may not get a big, in-depth look, but we hope so!
One theory going around is that the preview could be revealed during The Game Awards on December 7, but nothing is confirmed on that front.
On which platforms?
Rockstar has not confirmed on which platforms GT6 will be playable. However, we can at least expect to play it on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S at launch. We avoid saying PC here, because Red Dead Redemption 2 et GTA 5 were released a few months later on computer. In my opinion, however, it would be wise to launch on console et PC from the start, since it is perhaps the most anticipated game…in history.
If you haven’t yet made the jump to modern consoles, GTA 6 could be a good motivation, since it is possible that the game will not be released on PS4 and Xbox One.
The protagonists
Here, we rely on content leaks that have proven to be authentic. As a reminder: a massive content leak GTA released 90 videos of a game in the series in September 2022. Rockstar said at the time that the studio was extremely disappointed that details of its next game would be revealed in such a way.
And in this leak, Internet users have identified two protagonists: Jason and Lucia. Veteran video game journalist Jason Schreier had already revealed that the next game would have an adventure inspired by Bonnie and Clyde, according to sources close to Rockstar. Playing a female character for the story mode would be a first for the game since it was in 3D.
Where will the action take place?
Here we get into the rumors and hints of the leaks. Sources near Bloomberg’s Rockstar say the game will take place in a fictionalized version of Miami, but other cities will eventually be introduced into the story. In the universe of GTAthe fictional city inspired by Miami is Vice City.
There have been a lot of rumors about a South America chapter, too, but the project may have been scrapped. Nothing confirmed on this side!
Change at Rockstar
It should be noted that there have been big changes at Rockstar Games since GTA 5. Dan Houser, Rockstar co-founder, VP and one of the lead writers, stepped down in 2020.
Leslie Benzies left Rockstar North, the studio that developed Grand Theft Auto 4 et 5, after a two-year professional break. Benzies was the producer of GTA 5 and lead designer alongside Imran Sarwar, who himself left the company in 2019.
Mike Unsworth, another Rockstar VP, left the company in August 2023. In November 2023, it was learned that he joined Dan Houser’s new studio, Absurd Ventures. Same thing for Lazlow Jones (you’ll recognize this name if you like the series!), who left the boat in 2020.
Sam Houser (Dan’s brother) is still at Rockstar and signed the press release which announced the trailer for December.
It’s slightly worrying to see such big names leaving the company during the development of the next game GTA. Is something wrong with the project? This is what many online communities fear, but we keep an open mind!
GTA Online
Rockstar has not revealed anything regarding the fate of GTA Online once the next title arrives. After all, GTA Online can be purchased separately, then it could stay.
maybe GTA Online will be updated for GTA 6. Maybe there will be another GTA Online just for GTA 6. We do not know! And Rockstar isn’t saying anything yet. One thing is certain: Rockstar cannot put aside such a lucrative mode.
How long has the game been in development?
Rockstar has confirmed the development of the next GTA in February 2022, but journalists estimate that it has been in development since 2014.
When does it come out? GTA 6?
The only real answer to this question is: we don’t know.
We can, however, explore the rumors that have been circulating for a long time. In 2021, GameSpot reported that the game was going to be released in 2025. However, in 2023, a financial report from Take-Two (the publisher) shared massive projections for fiscal years 2025 and 2026. Fiscal year 2025 begins in April 2024 and ends in March 2025.
