GTA 5 next-gen, l’analyse de Digital Foundry

It would be hard to deny the power of the series GTA in our video game area. A saga with modest origins, but which has grown in power over the years. The latest installment, GTA 5 was released in 2013 on Xbox 360. A game that pushed back everything that had been seen until then, both in technical terms and in the richness of its world. A demonstration of force which was entitled to its remaster in 2014 on the Xbox One generation. A new success that will have sold like hotcakes until today… Rockstar needing to replenish its coffers, while waiting for the next episode, has chosen to resuscitate Michael, Franklin and Trevor on the current generation of consoles. That is nine years following its initial release. So, is this “next-gen” version a joke or a remaster in good and due form? The British from Digital Foundry have chosen to look into the question. The analysis here is for the Xbox Series X and PS5 versions, similar except for some shadows under the vehicles (absent on Xbox), and slightly longer loading times on PS. DF specifies that the Series S version will be analyzed later.

The loads:

The video begins with the famous loading times. Aficionados of previous versions know that these were horribly long. With an initial launch that exceeded two minutes, which we are reducing drastically here. From now on, you will be entitled to 20 seconds of loading on Series X! Regarding the transitions from one character to another and checkpoint refills, count on almost instantaneous. The SSDs of our current consoles are clearly in the spotlight here!

Graphics modes:

Now regarding visuals and gameplay. GTA 5 on next gen offers three graphics modes. The first is called Fidelity, offering native 4K/30fps with Ray Tracing shadows. A devilish precision emerges from the image, but with a gameplay that is very close to previous versions. To feel the difference on this point, it will be necessary to turn to the Performance modes. Moreover, two will be offered to you. The first is called RT performance, with 1440p/60fps enhanced with the same Ray Tracing shadows as Loyalty mode. Offering impressive stability, despite some slight framerate drops if war breaks out on screen. The last mode is called Performance, retaining 1440p/60fps, but excluding RT shadows. The result is a less beautiful image in the shadows, but a bit more stability during heavy fights.

The final word :

Analysts say that the preferred mode is definitely the Performance RT. Because not only does the image turn out to be superb, but it is above all the 60fps that changes the situation. Thanks to him, GTA 5 is reborn in its best light, with a pleasure in directing its character far superior to previous versions on consoles. The Performance mode, on the other hand, turns out to be really optional, to the point where one can wonder the reason for its existence… In any case, GTA 5 remains a pure masterpiece in 2022. To try definitely if you are new to the series, and to redo with pleasure for the others! Especially since the Online mode has been considerably expanded over the years. With, among other things, many solo contents, which can satisfy all types of players!
