Groupe Bellemare seized the opportunity to participate in the innovation zone of Quebec through the electrification of transportation. In collaboration with the truck manufacturer Peterbilt, 100% electric trucks might eventually be integrated into the Groupe Bellemare vehicle fleet.
One of the electric models, manufactured by Peterbilt, entered the backyard of Groupe Bellemare. It will hit the road on Tuesday for road tests that should last all week. The objective is to evaluate its performance on a specific route and to accumulate data to know how the electric truck might meet the needs of the company.
“We have sites a little further on the industrial boulevard, we are going to do the tests, really take data to see in the future if it works well over the whole period of the year”, explained the specialist in rolling stock and equipment at Groupe Bellemare, Sacha Bellemare.
Groupe Bellemare wants to participate in the energy transition and help achieve the objectives of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Peterbilt’s electric trucks might be part of the solution.
“We agree that diesel is a fuel that emits a lot of GHGs. Currently, the electrical side can be a solution at Groupe Bellemare,” said Mr. Bellemare.
With a fleet of around 350 vehicles, it remains to be seen how many of them might be replaced by an electric version. The model unveiled Monday at Groupe Bellemare has 240 kilometers of autonomy, which means that it will be necessary to favor predictable and shorter routes. The difference is that a diesel truck can travel 1,200 to 1,500 kilometers every day, Mr. Bellemare pointed out. The autonomy of the electric version will still make it possible to complete the route of the circuit planned by the Bellemare Group every day without problems, he added.
“On a diesel truck, when we brake, we convert our energy of movement into heat through the braking system. She is wasted. In an electric truck, a large part of that comes back to the batteries. Why is an electric truck efficient in town, in traffic, around ports, airports? Because they regenerate braking energy,” added Peterbilt Canada Alternative Energy Sales Manager Martin Blanchet.
A few charging stations have already been installed in Trois-Rivières and near the Groupe Bellemare yard, which should make it easy to carry out local transport.
