Group-wide IT outage: chaos and flight cancellations at…

In Frankfurt, the planes and the passengers are piling up. The situation in Vienna is currently still calm. Passengers are asked to inform themselves online regarding the status of the departure and alleged delays.

At the AUA mother Lufthansa there was a serious failure of the IT systems on Wednesday. As a result, an as yet unknown number of flights were delayed or cancelled. The systems for checking in as well as for boarding are affected. Aircraft and passengers were backed up at Frankfurt Airport. A spokeswoman in Frankfurt explained that they are working intensively on a solution. A crisis team met at the Lufthansa headquarters at the airport. The shares fell by 1.2 percentage points immediately following the announcement.

Currently no flight plans can be created, no data can be transmitted and planes have to stay on the ground. Affected passengers from Frankfurt report total chaos on Twitter: employees tried to record the passengers with pen and paper. A crisis team from the AUA mother should already be in action.

The company spokeswoman confirmed to the “Presse” that Austrian Airlines was also partially affected with the Vienna location. “The situation is calm at the moment. We ask flight passengers to inform themselves online before their flight and to check the status of the flight,” said the spokeswoman. One tries to proactively inform the passengers of affected flights.

A hacker attack is excluded.
