Grossophobia: in care too

In the journal Prescrire, we were able to read the edifying results of a survey carried out in France in 2021, among 104 people with excess weight. Nearly nine out of ten said they had been victims of stigma or discrimination because of their weight during a medical consultation. More precisely, it involved paternalistic and moralizing behavior, devaluation associated with guilt, mockery and even contempt. These behaviors from another time have the consequence that the participants in the study expressed anger, indignation, sadness, shame, guilt. Worse, they also expressed their discouragement and especially a worsening of their anxiety or depression. The icing on the cake was that they denounced errors or delays in diagnosis, as caregivers remained focused on their weight. To read Prescrire, this grossophobia – let’s call a spade a spade – led some study participants to stop all medical follow-up. Going to the doctor only to come out dejected, humiliated and poorly treated to boot, it’s a bit big all the same.
