From now on, children and young people in the earthquake area will receive the same amounts of money for earthquake suffering as adults. The scheme for immaterial damage will also be expanded. The adjustments should be completed by next summer at the latest.
Groningen residents with damage to their homes can turn to the Institute for Mining Damage Groningen (IMG). Since regarding a year and a half ago, Groningen residents can also apply for compensation for immaterial damage. It is a fixed compensation for their personal suffering and sorrow.
The IMG uses three fixed amounts: 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 euros per person. The greater the suffering suffered, the higher the amount. Groningen residents who live in houses that have to be demolished and rebuilt in the context of the reinforcement task will from now on be awarded the highest amount. In the past this was not the case, which caused many people to object.
The expansion will be introduced retroactively. Some 9,000 Groningen residents who did not receive compensation will receive it. And regarding 27,000 Groningen residents will still receive the higher compensation.
The same amounts will soon apply to children and young people as to adults. They were supposed to receive compensation this spring, but that will now be later so that the adjustments can be taken into account.
More than 62,000 people have already applied for compensation for immaterial damage from the IMG. Just over half have been reimbursed so far. Due to the expansion, this will increase to regarding 70 percent. About a quarter of these people will receive the highest amount. Previously it was only 4 percent.
