An Argentinian journalist who exposed police brutality in Argentina’s northern province of Corrientes was found hanged in her home, police sources said on Sunday that the incident was a homicide.
The body of Griselda Blanco, 45, was discovered by one of her brothers on Saturday in her home in Curuzu Cuatia, 600 km north of Buenos Aires. The suicide hypothesis was quickly dismissed, and a former companion of the journalist, suspected of the murder, was arrested, indicated the same sources.
The victim bore signs of blows, hair was found in her hands – which suggests that she tried to defend herself – and no trace of break-in was found at her home, he said. added from the same source.
The family of Ms. Blanco, however, said they doubted the guilt of the ex-companion, Armando Jara, also a journalist. “I don’t think we should qualify this as feminicide (…) In my opinion, Jara has nothing to do with all this, even if we are awaiting the expert reports and their results”, declared Lautaro Cesani, a sons that the victim had had with another companion.
According to Mr. Cesani, Griselda Blanco had received threats following having published, on her local news website entitled “Griselda Blanco Noticias”, articles on alleged violence attributed to the police of the province of Corrientes as well as a case negligence in a hospital.
The public prosecutor’s office withdrew the investigation from the local police and handed it over to the Argentine federal police.
The Argentine Federation of Press Workers (Fatpren) expressed in a statement its “deep concern”, stressing that “the colleague had denounced embezzlement within the local hospital and the political and police power”.
