Grimes Speaks Out About Custody Battle with Elon Musk
In a series of recent posts on X, formerly known as Twitter, musician Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, opened up about the emotional toll of her custody battle with tech billionaire Elon Musk. Though they maintained a private life, their high-profile relationship and unique family dynamics brought them into the public eye.
The couple first announced their relationship in 2018. They welcomed their firstborn, X Æ A-XII, through a natural pregnancy. Their middle daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, and youngest child, Tau Techno Mechanicus, were born via surrogacy with the assistance of artificial fertilization.
While Grimes has been vocal about protecting her children’s privacy, she recently shared that she went months without seeing one of her children. This followed earlier posts where she expressed her commitment to keeping her children out of the public eye.
A year-long legal battle ensued, with Grimes alleging that Texas, where the case was heard, has laws that are “terrible for mothers.” She revealed that posts from her Instagram account, as well as her modeling work, were used against her during the custody proceedings.
“I spent a year in a battle [legal] in a state with terrible laws for mothers, seeing how they used my Instagram posts and my work as a model as reasons to say that I should not have custody of my children,” Grimes wrote.
Going through the ordeal, Grimes said she felt she was losing her confidante and “love of her life” to a person she no longer recognized.
“I went through all of this with a fraction of your resources (or strategic IQ/experience). During that time, I didn’t see any of my babies for five months. And that is all I can say publicly, since most of my experience in recent years must remain behind closed doors.”
The court proceedings wrapped up last week in Texas, with Grimes suggesting she now secures custody every two weeks.
What accusations are being made in the custody battles?

**Host:** This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about tension between Grimes and Musk. They had a highly publicized on-again, off-again relationship for several years.
**Alex:** Exactly. Their relationship always seemed to be a bit unconventional, and it seems those complexities are now playing out in their custody arrangement. They reportedly began their relationship in 2018 and welcomed two children together before separating in 2022.
**Host:** And both have reportedly filed lawsuits against each other?
**Alex:** That’s right. In 2023, both Grimes and Musk filed separate lawsuits related to custody arrangements. The details are still somewhat under wraps, but it’s clear this is a contentious situation.
**Host:** What are some of the potential implications for their children in this highly public battle?
**Alex:**
That’s a very important question. Obviously, the well-being of their children should be the top priority. Unfortunately, these highly publicized custody battles can be incredibly damaging for children, even if unintentionally. It’s going to be crucial for both Grimes and Musk to prioritize their children’s emotional needs during this difficult time.
