Grenadian appointed head of UN-Climate

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday announced the appointment of Grenadian Simon Stiell as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (CCNUCC).

Mr. Stiell succeeds the Mexican Patricia Espinosa to whom the Secretary-General is grateful for his commitment and dedication in the service of the Organization, said UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric during his daily press briefing.

Mr. Stiell, a “true champion” of creative approaches in the collective global response to the climate crisis, brings to this position “unique skills” developed over a 35-year career, and extensive experience in bilateral affairs. , regional and multilateral, noted the spokesperson.

Mr Stiell served as Chief Minister in the Government of Grenada from 2013 to June 2022, holding the portfolio of Minister for Climate Resilience and the Environment for five years. He was also Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Minister of State for Human Resource Development and the Environment and Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Forests and Sin.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was adopted at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. On that occasion, it was endorsed by 154 States, to which must be added all the members of the European Community. Today, its adoption is near-universal with 197 signatory countries. Among the objectives of this convention is to promote the fight once morest climate change caused by the enhancement of the greenhouse effect resulting from human activities.
