Indonesian women’s singles badminton player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung is determined to win the remaining BWF tournament titles this year, after bringing home the bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“I will focus on the world tour this year, because there are several world tours that must be completed until the end of the year, and I am determined to win the title,” said Gregoria as reported by BetweenMonday (5/8).

For the world’s eighth-ranked women’s singles player, the experience at the Olympics this time was a place for her to learn from many great players. It also became additional ammunition to continue the process and develop herself as an athlete.

“All the players at the Olympics are great players in their respective countries with high fighting spirit,” said Gregoria.

“For example, Carolina Marin who fought to play (while in pain and injured), but in the end she couldn’t be forced,” he added.

When asked about special moments during the 2024 Olympics series, Gregoria mentioned the match against Kim Ga Eun (South Korea) in the round of 16.

“It was quite tense and the third game was very tight. After (winning), I felt relieved because I felt like I wasn’t alone in the arena, many people celebrated (my victory) and waved the Indonesian flag. That’s what made me excited to play,” said Gregoria.

“I also try to relax, cheer myself up, try to breathe, scream, and give positive affirmations when I lose points,” he added.

Although he was the only medal winner in badminton, the world junior champion did not forget to appreciate his teammates who prepared themselves well.

“In terms of results, it is indeed unfortunate. But if you look at the preparation, the seniors’ training was extraordinary. All sectors were also prepared very well. It’s just that there may be factors such as tension that they have to fight. Appreciation to all,” he said.

On the other hand, Indonesian women’s singles coach Herli Djaenudin hopes that Gregoria can maintain her spirit after achieving this achievement. “Gregoria is a player with good technique. Her physicality has also improved a lot compared to before. Mentality too, in several matches, at critical points she can overcome,” said Herli. (Z-6)
