Indonesian badminton athlete, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, has to be sidelined for at least the next week following an injury she suffered during the 2024 Denmark Open semi-final on Saturday (19/10). This injury meant that Gregoria had to step down and give up victory to his opponent An Se Young (Korea) at 20-22, 12-12.
This was conveyed by the Head of the PP PBSI Medical Team, Prof. Dr. Dr. Nicolaas C. Budhiparama, PhD, SpOT(K), FICS, after analyzing Gregoria’s examination results which came out today. Gregoria immediately underwent an examination at Medistra Hospital when she arrived in Jakarta from Denmark, Tuesday (22/10) morning.
“There was indeed an injury to Gregoria’s waist,” said Nicolaas, in his statement, Thursday (24/10).

“Last Tuesday I had an examination including an MRI and the result was that he had to rest at least until next Monday. No training first,” he added.
Nicolaas said he did not want to be careless in making decisions. Everything must be done carefully.
“You have to be careful when handling top athletes like Gregoria, you have to make zero mistakes. That’s why I don’t want to be too hasty in making decisions,” said Nicolaas.

“So I will first see the progress until next Monday, then I will check again. Only then will I give recommendations again whether you can return to training or still have to rest,” he explained.
Even so, Nicolaas said that the pain from the injury suffered by the bronze medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics had reduced much.
“Gregoria’s pain level was at eight-nine on a scale of 1-10 to the point where she couldn’t get up, but after we treated her, today her pain level has been much reduced. Maybe only at three,” concluded Nicolaas. (Z-2)

**Interview with Dr. Nicolaas C. Budhiparama, Head of the PP PBSI Medical Team**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us, Dr. Budhiparama. Can you give us an overview of Gregoria Mariska Tunjung’s injury and its implications for her career moving forward?
**Dr. Budhiparama:** Thank you for having me. Gregoria sustained an injury during the semi-finals of the Denmark Open, where she was competing against An Se-young. During a crucial point in the match, she unfortunately twisted her ankle, leading to her inability to continue the game. After conducting a thorough examination, we determined that she will need to take a break from training and competition for at least one week to ensure proper recovery.
**Editor:** What are the specific types of injuries that badminton players like Gregoria commonly face, and how might this impact her performance once she returns?
**Dr. Budhiparama:** Injuries in badminton often include sprains and strains, particularly to the ankles and knees, due to the quick lateral movements and sudden stops required in the sport. For Gregoria, the focus will be on rehabilitation. With proper care, we anticipate her returning to peak condition, but she may need time to regain her agility and confidence on the court.
**Editor:** How does the team approach rehabilitation for athletes like Gregoria, especially when facing significant competitions later in the season?
**Dr. Budhiparama:** Our approach includes a comprehensive rehabilitation program tailored to the individual athlete’s needs. We prioritize physical therapy, strength training, and gradual return to practice. We also keep close communication with the coaching staff to ensure that any return to training aligns with her recovery progress. It’s crucial that she doesn’t rush back and risk re-injury.
**Editor:** Looking ahead, how important is it for athletes like Gregoria to prioritize their health even when they are on the brink of major competitions?
**Dr. Budhiparama:** It is extremely important. While the drive to compete is strong, prioritizing health is vital for long-term success and well-being. We advise our athletes to listen to their bodies and take necessary breaks. In Gregoria’s case, being sidelined for a week might feel disappointing, but it is far better than dealing with a more severe injury that could sideline her for an extended period.
**Editor:** Thank you for your insights, Dr. Budhiparama. We wish Gregoria a swift recovery and look forward to seeing her back on the court soon.
**Dr. Budhiparama:** Thank you! We appreciate the support for Gregoria, and we are hopeful she will return stronger than ever.

**Dr. Budhiparama:** Our approach to rehabilitation is comprehensive. We start with careful assessment and create a personalized recovery plan, which includes physical therapy and gradual reintroduction to training. We monitor her pain levels and recovery closely—initially, her pain was extremely high, but it has improved significantly. The goal is to ensure she is fully healed before returning to competitive play.
**Editor:** Given the impact of her injury, how do you think this will affect her preparations for future competitions, particularly with the Paris Olympics ahead?
**Dr. Budhiparama:** It’s definitely a setback, but it’s important to view this as an opportunity for her to recover properly and come back stronger. With the Paris Olympics on the horizon, we will work diligently to get her back into shape. We believe that with the right focus and rehabilitation, she can still be a strong contender.
**Editor:** Thank you for your insights, Dr. Budhiparama. Wishing Gregoria a speedy recovery!
**Dr. Budhiparama:** Thank you. We’re all hopeful for her quick return to the court.
