Gregoria Disappointed After First Round Knockout at China Open

Indonesian women’s singles badminton player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung felt slapped by the defeat she experienced in the first round of the 2024 China Open.

Competing at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium Changzhou, China, Wednesday (18/9), Gregoria lost to Indian representative Malvika Bansod 24-26 and 19-21.

The 2024 Paris Olympics bronze medallist was disappointed that he could not show his best performance which made him immediately eliminated from the BWF Super 1000 tournament.

“Today, I did not show my best level of play, I should have been able to play better than I did earlier,” said Gregoria in a written statement, Wednesday (18/9).

“This defeat is a slap in the face for me, in the first two tournaments after the Olympics the results were not what I wanted. Not only that,
in terms of results but also performance,” he continued.

After the sweet results at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Gregoria has not been able to perform optimally in the BWF tournament. Before the China Open, Gregoria ran aground in the second round of 16 of the Hong Kong Open after losing to Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon.

Gregoria said her slow playing rhythm made it difficult for her to control the match, while her Indian opponent played with confidence.

“The biggest difficulty in today’s match was my slow movements. In the rallies, I just followed the rhythm of my opponent.
“being confident, made my game less comfortable. Also, I didn’t initiate attacks,” said Gregoria.

“But apart from all that, the positive thing is that I didn’t give up easily, I was still able to force myself to catch up, only
