Gregor Kobel: Bitter Setback as Borussia Dortmund Goalkeeper Misses Out on European Championship Number One Spot

2023-12-17 05:59:11

Gregor Kobel is without a doubt one of the best goalkeepers in Europe. The goalkeeper has developed into a top-class goalkeeper since his move to Borussia Dortmund in 2021. He saves his team again and again and has already secured one or two points for BVB.

But now the 26-year-old has to accept a bitter setback. As Swiss national coach Murat Yakin announced on Friday (December 15th), Kobel will not go into the 2024 European Championship as number one – bitter news for Borussia Dortmund’s top star.

Borussia Dortmund: Kobel not number one at the European Championship in Germany

With his performances at BVB, he not only recommended himself for the biggest football clubs in Europe, but also underlined his ambitions for the national team. So far, ex-Bayer keeper Yann Sommer has been number one – and it will remain that way for next year’s tournament.

“Yann Sommer is number one and will remain that way. He will be in goal at the European Championships,” said Yakin. So Kobel once again only has the role of substitute keeper when his national team has to play against hosts Germany, Hungary and Scotland, among others.

Given Kobel’s appearances in the BVB uniform, this decision comes as quite a surprise. Sommer also delivers strongly at Inter Milan, but they have to be able to afford to leave a goalkeeper of Kobel’s caliber on the bench. Especially since Sommer, at 35, is no longer the youngest. But perhaps that’s exactly why Yakin chose the Milanese.

Only five national team appearances for Kobel

With summer, the national coach decided on the more experienced option. Sommer has been guarding Switzerland’s goal for years, has taken part in all the tournaments and knows what is important at a European Championship. Kobel, on the other hand, has only made five appearances for Switzerland so far. “We gave the other goalies in the European Championship qualification the opportunity to stand in goal,” explained Yakin.

In addition, Kobel had to withdraw injured twice and missed a few international matches as a result. After the European Championships at the latest, he should probably be Switzerland’s number one permanently – but this news is still a bitter setback for the BVB star.
