“Yann Sommer is number one and will remain that way. He will be in goal at the European Championships,” said Yakin. So Kobel once again only has the role of substitute keeper when his national team has to play against hosts Germany, Hungary and Scotland, among others.

Given Kobel’s appearances in the BVB uniform, this decision comes as quite a surprise. Sommer also delivers strongly at Inter Milan, but they have to be able to afford to leave a goalkeeper of Kobel’s caliber on the bench. Especially since Sommer, at 35, is no longer the youngest. Only five national team appearances for Kobel
