“Greenwashing in its purest form”: Coca Cola sponsors…

Environmental protection organizations have heavily criticized the sponsorship agreement. According to Greenpeace Austria, Coca Cola produces 120 billion disposable plastic bottles a year. The company referred to its good intentions.

A sponsorship deal between COP27 and Coca Cola has drawn harsh criticism from environmental organizations. “The company produces 120 billion disposable plastic bottles per year – 99 percent of the plastics are made from oil and gas,” said Greenpeace Austria. The company referred – as orf.at quoted from the “Guardian” – to its good intentions.

The “Break Free From Plastic” initiative spoke of “greenwashing in its purest form”. It is “amazing that a company so closely associated with the fossil fuel industry is allowed to sponsor such an important climate meeting”.

“We are ready to do our part”

The beverage company said it shares the goal of avoiding waste and appreciates “the efforts to raise awareness” of climate protection. In addition, Coca-Cola wants to support collective action once morest climate change through the partnership. “We are ready to do our part and have set ourselves ambitious goals for our company,” Coca-Cola was quoted as saying in the Guardian.

Greenpeace also demanded this: “If the company wants to be part of the solution in the future, it has to turn off the plastic tap. Switching to reusable and filling systems instead of disposable plastic is an important step in the fight once morest the climate crisis,” says consumer expert Lisa Panhuber.

The 27th UN Climate Change Conference will take place in Egypt from November 7th to 18th. There, almost 200 countries are discussing how the fight once morest global warming can be stepped up. Time is of the essence, as the past seven years have been the warmest since weather records began.
