Clean cars were in greater demand in the new and used car sectors in 2023

Vienna (OTS) – “The electric car is here to stay. The increase of 39.4 percent in fully electric cars compared to the previous year is really impressive,” says Hermann Weratschnig, transport spokesman for the Green Party, looking at the figures for 2023 presented by Statistics Austria on Thursday. There were 47,621 fully electric vehicles Cars registered among the total of 215,050 new cars.

“There were 13,456 more new battery-electric cars than in 2022,” said Weratschnig. In addition, there were over 30 percent more new hybrids, while new registrations of diesel and gasoline cars are steadily decreasing.

The trend towards alternative drives, especially electric cars, is also evident in new cars across the federal states, Weratschnig continued: “In Burgenland, Lower and Upper Austria, Vorarlberg and Vienna, more electric cars were registered than diesel-powered ones in 2023 . In Salzburg, Tyrol, Carinthia and Styria, electric cars have now almost caught up with diesel cars.

“The decline in registrations of combustion engines is now also continuing in the used car sector, with double-digit growth rates for alternative drives,” explains Weratschnig. There, electric cars (+15.2 percent) and hybrids (petrol hybrids +24.5 percent, diesel hybrids +50.3 percent) now account for around 8.6 percent of all used cars registered last year. The sector is still heavily dominated by diesel.

Weratschnig sees a clear green signature: “The continuous expansion of the charging infrastructure in public as well as in the private sector, which is strongly supported by Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler, the accompanying constant expansion of renewable energy as well as the subsidies and tax relief for emission-free vehicles result in a sustainable Boost towards sustainable mobility for Austria. The air is becoming increasingly cleaner and CO2 emissions are decreasing significantly. We Greens have been campaigning for this for years. The fact that demand from citizens and companies continues to increase is confirmed by our work in parliament and the federal government.”
