According to the population, unnecessary and harmful to the climate – environmental protection organization is calling on Transport Minister Gewessler to put an end to private flights in Austria

Vienna (OTS) Shortly before the EU Transport Council, Greenpeace publishes an integral survey on private air travel. This shows that around two thirds (61 percent) of Austrians support a ban on private jets. Almost three quarters (73 percent) also generally reject private flights. The two main reasons for this: According to those surveyed, private jets are harmful to the climate and the environment (65 percent), and there are plenty of other transport alternatives (78 percent). In view of these figures, Greenpeace is calling on Transport Minister Gewessler to impose an Austria-wide ban on private flights.

“The super-rich fly carefree through the air, but in doing so they are massively fueling the climate crisis. People in Austria have also recognized this and are in favor of a ban on private jets,” says Marc Dengler, climate and energy expert at Greenpeace in Austria. When asked regarding further measures to restrict private jet flights, an overwhelming majority of 79 percent support a kerosene tax, similar to the tax on gasoline or diesel. 70 percent also support a ban on short-haul flights, provided affordable and fast train connections are available.

Private jets are the most climate-damaging means of transport. They emit 50 times more greenhouse gases per passenger kilometer than a train journey. As a Greenpeace report shows, the number of annual flights by Austrian private jets more than doubled between 2019 and 2022. The most popular routes were Paris-Geneva and Vienna-Salzburg. The latter takes less than two and a half hours by train. “Private jets emit huge amounts of climate-damaging CO2 and are fueling the climate crisis. Transport Minister Gewessler must pull the ripcord and campaign for an end to private jets at EU level. With a national ban, Austria can also become a role model across Europe,” says Dengler.
