The activists unfurled a 300-foot banner denouncing the shipment with the message “Gas destroys – Stop Fossil Gas.” Their action directly targeted the burgeoning LNG industry and the climate-damaging impacts of continued fossil fuel dependence.
“This ship carries tangible evidence of the notorious failures of the biomarkers-republic Speaking at Peace,” said John Noël, Deputy Climate Program Director at Greenpeace USA, “It’s hard to forget that this is happening

What are the environmental concerns Greenpeace has regarding fracking for natural gas mentioned in the interview?
## Interview: Greenpeace Germany Protests Arrival of US LNG Tanker
**(Interviewer):** Joining us today is Alex Reed, a spokesperson for Greenpeace Germany, who witnessed firsthand the recent protest against an arriving US LNG tanker in the port of Brunsbüttel. Welcome to the show.
**(Alex Reed):** Thank you for having me.
**(Interviewer):** Can you tell us more about the protest and what prompted Greenpeace to take action against this particular LNG shipment?
**(Alex Reed):** We organized this large-scale protest with activists from Germany, Belgium, and Poland because this LNG tanker marks the beginning of US fossil fuel exports to Europe, specifically from the newly opened Calcasieu Pass terminal in Louisiana. We believe this is a dangerous step in the wrong direction for Europe’s energy future and a win for the fossil fuel industry. **(Interviewer):** What are your main concerns regarding US LNG exports to Europe?
**(Alex Reed):** Firstly, fracking for natural gas is incredibly damaging to the environment and local communities in the US. Secondly, LNG is still a fossil fuel that contributes to climate change. Investing in LNG infrastructure locks us into decades of dependence on fossil fuels when we should be rapidly transitioning to renewable energy sources.
**(Interviewer):** Some argue that LNG is a necessary bridge fuel during the transition to renewables. What’s your response to that?
**(Alex Reed):** We believe that there are cleaner and more sustainable alternatives available right now. Europe should prioritize energy efficiency, developing renewable energy sources like wind and solar, and investing in energy storage solutions instead of relying on more fossil fuels.
**(Interviewer):** What message do you hope this protest sends to the German government and the European Union?
**(Alex Reed):** This protest is a clear message that European citizens demand a clean energy future, free from the harmful impacts of fossil fuels. We urge the European Union to reject LNG imports and invest in a truly sustainable energy system.
