Greenpeace criticism – OMV behind industry average

The environmental organization Greenpeace has taken a close look at twelve energy companies, including OMV. The result: the six European and six other non-European oil companies are not living up to their promises in terms of sustainability. According to the Greenpeace report published on Wednesday, OMV is even below the industry average here.

According to the report, 92 percent (81.52 billion euros) of the investments on average in the twelve companies went into the maintenance and expansion of fossil fuel business models. Greenpeace explains that OMV is worse than the industry average here. Because in the Austrian group, around 99 percent of the total investments in the previous year went into fossil fuels – and thus only around one percent (EUR 28.8 million) into the expansion of renewable energies.

“OMV must finally turn its back on the fossil fuels oil and gas. All future investments must flow into renewable business sectors. This is the only way to avoid an economic and ecological disaster and to make a real contribution to climate protection,” appeals Marc Dengler, climate and energy expert at Greenpeace in Austria. The environmentalists are also holding politicians accountable: “In order to get Austria on course for climate change, the federal government must finally adopt a legal timetable for phasing out oil and gas by 2035,” demands Dengler.

According to the report, only 0.3 percent of the energy produced by the twelve companies in the previous year came from renewable sources. “Apart from nice words, the big oil and gas companies don’t have much to offer to keep their climate promises,” said Dengler. “Instead of actively promoting the energy transition, they are putting their money into fossil fuels despite the escalating climate crisis. New oil and gas projects are not compatible with any climate goals and their financing is therefore a lost investment.”

OMV itself wants to become climate-neutral by 2050. The “safe and permanent storage of CO2” is an important pillar on the way there. But even such a thing is criticized in the report.
