It’s a product that we all use almost every day, an accessory that we can no longer do without and which can sometimes be sorely missed when we forget it. The charger for our phones and the multitude of multimedia accessories that we own has become an essential part of our lives. When they are without one, some even panic at the idea of no longer having a battery, as if their life depended on it.

Totally dependent on our electronic devices, we often forget that the accessory that allows them to be recharged comes from factories located several thousand kilometers from us. Far, very far from the sovereignty advocated by the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron during the Covid-19 pandemic. But how can we do otherwise for customers? For our economy, the field of possibilities is immense. In France, there are around 95 million mobile phones in activity. And you have to recharge them.

“I took a big slap in the face ethically”

In a market outrageously dominated by China, it is very difficult for European companies to stand out. However, it is in this ultra-competitive segment that the French company Green_E has positioned itself since 2016 by opting for a “greener” range focusing on the recycling of materials. “The idea came to me while talking with friends. They asked me about my activity and wondered what I was doing for the planet. I didn’t know what to answer and it made me think. I took a big slap in the face ethically and morally,” remembers Guillaume Bensi. The entrepreneur then decides to launch into the eco-design of chargers and charging cables. From Rennes, it ensures that its raw materials come from recycled materials and that its products, once out of use, can easily be dismantled for reprocessing. “The problem was that I continued to have it made on the other side of the world,” admits Guillaume Bensi.

The founder of Green_E then attempted a coup with the ambition of repatriating part of his production to France. “I was clearly told that I would never make it. ” Missed ! For several days, the company MEM, for Mechanical Electronic Molding, has been releasing some chargers from its unit in Montargis (Loiret). Specializing in electronic objects such as sensors and cables, the company should ultimately produce 600 models per day of what becomes the “first recyclable charger made in France”. Given the difference in labor costs with Asia, the Rennes entrepreneur and his partner opted for a zero waste strategy which makes it possible to limit raw material costs as much as possible.

To afford it, you will necessarily have to pay a little more than the average, even if Green_E has managed to stay at the same price as “premium” brands like Apple. “The difference is that with us, everything is guaranteed for ten years,” assures its designer. By November, the first models will be available at Boulanger and soon at Système U and Carrefour. Allow around 25 euros for a 20 watt charger, compared to 20 euros for the Chinese version manufactured by the same company.
