ABB will join German green steel project

Automation specialist ABB will supply mixers for one of the largest green steel projects currently being implemented in Germany.
The company said in statement which will supply at least one ABB ArcSave® electromagnetic mixer to the Salzgitter steel mill, one of the largest basic industries in the European country, with an installed capacity for 7 million tons of steel per year.

The mixer will be installed next to a hydrogen electric arc blast furnace manufactured by Primetals Technologies. With a capacity for 1.9 million tons of steel per year, the new blast furnace will replace coal-fired equipment at the Salzgitter unit located in the German city of the same name.
The text says, however, that the steel company intends to go further and exchange three coal blast furnaces at the facility, in addition to two steel reduction units, for modernized lines also powered by hydrogen. The entire project should be completed by 2033, the year in which the company hopes to reduce its carbon emissions by 95% compared to current ones.

“With this project, we have become pioneers in decarbonization,” said Ulrich Grethe, production director at Salzgitter, which has more than 25,000 employees worldwide and 150 subsidiaries, including branches and controlled companies. “With Primetals’ electric arc casting, we will rely on a consolidated technology optimized by ABB electromagnetic mixers.”

The electromagnetic mixer ABB it will optimize the operation of the electric arc blast furnace by allowing the mixing of molten scrap and ferroalloy with less stratification, greater homogenization, in less time and with less energy and electrode demand.
Used in at least 165 steel production lines around the world, the mixer is also capable, according to ABB, of increasing blast furnace yields by around 1%, in addition to improving equipment productivity by between 5% and 7%.
