Green hydrogen: Morocco takes its bearings and thinks big

Kiosk360. Morocco is positioning itself as an African hub in the green hydrogen industry. In this, it has many assets, including proximity to its future markets. This article is a press review taken from the daily Les Inspirations Eco.

Morocco is taking the lead in the green hydrogen industry. It is one of the four countries capable of becoming hubs in this area, along with Egypt, Mauritania and southern Africa. This is highlighted by the daily Eco Inspirations in its edition of Tuesday, January 10. This positioning is favored by a situation marked by the energy crisis generated by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and by the commitments made by more than 140 States to reduce their carbon footprint.

According to a document (Policy brief) on green hydrogen, published by the Policy center for the New South, written by Mounia Boucetta, director in charge of the office of the CEO of the OCP group and relayed by the daily, “the continent might produce 50 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2035, which would represent nearly 10% of the world market”.

For Morocco, the tone was set, following the Royal Guidelines resulting from the working meeting devoted, on November 22, to the development of renewable energies and new perspectives in this field. “The Sovereign has, in fact, given his instructions to develop, as soon as possible, an operational and incentive Morocco Offer, covering the entire value chain of the green hydrogen sector in Morocco”, recalls the daily. .

The advantages are not lacking. The author of the policy brief notes that the consolidation of investments made or in progress, particularly in the renewable energy, logistics and industrial sectors, Morocco’s geostrategic positioning, its business climate which is one of the most attractive in the region as well as the projects undertaken in research and development, are relevant factors for building the Moroccan offer.

According to the latest Renewable energy country attractiveness index (RECAI) report, “Morocco topped the adjusted index thanks to its ambitious plans for solar, wind and, more recently, green hydrogen, in pursuit a share of green energy of 52% by 2030”, notes the daily.

The existing or planned interconnections with Europe, the green hydrogen roadmap established in 2021, the creation of the Green H2 cluster, the desalination projects in progress as well as the conclusion of several partnerships, in particular with the he Germany and the Netherlands “strengthen Morocco’s position as a reliable player in the green hydrogen market and in the conduct of large-scale projects”, says Mounia Boucetta.
