Green hydrogen: Brazil emerges as a strategic partner for Germany’s energy and climate goals

Brazil is a country with a diversified energy matrix, given its wealth of renewable and clean sources, making it an attractive green hydrogen (H2V) market for the world. Discussions around the objective of decarbonizing the planet by 2050 are on the rise and have driven partnerships focused on renewable energy actions. Green hydrogen has a lot to contribute to this process and it is estimated that it will generate revenue for Brazil of R$ 150 billion per year until then, according to research by the Green Hydrogen Opportunity in Brazil, published in 2023.

Paraná already has a project to transform animal waste into renewable energy in the Green Hydrogen modality, the result of cooperation agreements with companies in the European country

Germany is the one keeping its eyes open on this market, and Brazil is emerging as a strategic partner for the European country’s energy and climate goals. In the assessment of the honorary consul of Germany in Curitiba and director of the Brazil-Germany Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK Paraná), Andreas Hoffrichter, “Germany is not only a country that understands a lot about renewable energy, but above all it understands energy efficiency . So, it’s not just about producing energy through the sun, wind or water, but in a way that has as little waste as possible. And then Brazil has the know-how and can provide consultancy for various projects,” he says.

Recovery from the energy crisis

Hoffrichter believes that, despite the economic crisis that Germany is experiencing, the European country should recover in 2024 and this could be a beneficial market. “There are no better conditions in the world for the production of renewable energy than in Brazil. This is a market estimated at R$150 million per year for export. We talk a lot about the green transformation at the Chamber in 2023, with some seminars, and we will insist on this theme this year, to bring investments from Germany to Curitiba”, highlights the director of AHK Paraná.

Transforming waste into green hydrogen

Hoffrichter was part of a delegation from the government of Paraná, which was in Toledo, in the west of Paraná, last year, to sign a bilateral cooperation agreement with the German state of Meckenburg-Vorpommen, in the Northeast region of Germany, in area of sustainability, mainly in renewable energy actions.

Germany is a global reference in the use of biodigesters in gas production. This equipment accelerates organic decomposition, extracting gases from waste that can be used in industry and other activities. The city of Toledo, in turn, is one of the largest chicken and pig breeders in Brazil and one of the projects addresses the issue of waste from the production of these animals in 17 municipalities in the region.

The partnership with German companies will not only bring investment to Paraná, but will solve the problem of disposing of this waste. Speaking only of chickens, the state slaughters 10 million per day. The entire volume of waste they produce cannot go into the ground, due to the risk of deteriorating the environment, hence the importance of transforming it into energy, explains Hoffrichter.

“In Toledo, we signed a cooperation contract to design a biodigester. It consists of collecting animal waste, such as chickens and pigs, from around 30 properties, placing it in a plumbing system and transforming everything into biogas. Green hydrogen can then be made from it.”
Green hydrogen can be used to generate electricity or energy storage, for example. It can also be fuel for cars, planes, trucks and ships.

About AHK Paraná

Stimulate the market economy by promoting the exchange of investments, trade and services between Germany and Brazil, in addition to promoting regional and global cooperation between economic blocs. This is the mission of the Brazil-Germany Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK Paraná), an entity currently headed by the Board of Directors and Honorary Consul of Germany in Curitiba, Andreas FH Hoffrichter.
