According to a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Green Future Index 2023 Iceland, Finland and Norway are the countries best prepared for a sustainable, low carbon dioxide (CO2) future. The other countries with the highest scores in the study are Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, South Korea, France and Spain.
This index measures how 76 countries around the world are reducing their carbon emissions, developing clean energy and innovating in sustainable sectors. It also takes into account the initiatives taken to protect the environment and the climate policy of governments.
Iceland, which ranks first with a score of 6.69 out of 10, is one of the two European countries that produces the most electricity from renewable sources. The country scores points this year thanks to its strategy to improve the development of wind farms: a new law to facilitate the construction of wind turbines is expected for 2023.
While the highest-rated countries are mainly located in Northern Europe, one Asian country is also in the top 10 of the “Green Future Index 2023”: South Korea, with a score of 6.00 out of 10. The country has doubled spending on its plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 to $9.2 billion in 2022 and created a $1.9 billion climate fund.
France is almost tied with South Korea in 9th position (score of 5.99). In December 2022, France announced the construction of a €2.5 billion undersea pipeline between Marseille and Barcelona, which might transport up to 2 million tonnes of hydrogen per year as part of the green hydrogen development strategy.
