As of April 1, the green card and sticker will disappear from registered vehicles. On the other hand, car or motorcycle insurance remains compulsory and essential.

It’s the end of an era: in two weeks, from April 1, it will no longer be compulsory to stick your green insurance sticker on the windshield of your vehicle, nor to hold a green insurance card. insurance in the car.

Digitization of official documents

This measure, published in the Official Journal at the beginning of December, is part of the desire to simplify administrative procedures and the digitization of official documents, as recently for the driving license.

From now on, insurers fill out a file called the insured vehicle file (FVA) which can be consulted by law enforcement. During a road check, it will therefore no longer be necessary to present insurance papers. The police will check, using the registration number, in this file, whether the driver is actually insured.

The government site dedicated to Road safety details the new rules for this measure.

Since March 12, each holder of an insurance contract can check the status of your vehicle in the insured vehicle file using the registration number and the form number of the registration certificate. If the vehicle is not entered in the file, the holder of the insurance contract must contact their insurer.

Insurance remains compulsory and essential

Be careful, make no mistake: to circulate, registered vehicles must always a minima be covered by so-called “third-party” Auto or Motorcycle insurance.

This insurance, intended to protect victims of a road accident by allowing them to obtain compensation for their bodily or material damage from an insurer, remains compulsory.

As a reminder, the penalty incurred for lack of insurance is fixed fine of 750 to which additional penalties may be added such as suspension or cancellation of the license with a ban on re-taking it, immediate immobilization of the vehicle, etc.

Fight once morest falsification of papers

In France, the number of vehicles driving without insurance is estimated at 800,000. The dematerialization of the green sticker should help limit the possibility of evading this obligation.

The measure should be welcomed as good news by motorists; since the introduction of the sticker in 1986, policyholders who did not take the time to correctly stick it on the windshield and update it were exposed to a fine of 35 euros. From now on, the problem will no longer arise. The measure also makes it possible to combat the falsification of documents, since all documents will be listed in the file of insured vehicles.

Insurance companies themselves have been asking for years for the removal of the green square, to avoid administrative overload, as well as the costs of printing and sending millions of cards.
