Dubai (Etihad)

Yesterday, it was announced that the first flight was completed in Dubai to test the possibility of converting methanol into sustainable aviation fuel, in cooperation between Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company “Masdar”, a global leader in the energy sector, “Total Energy”, the General Aviation Authority in the Emirates, and “ Airbus, Falcon Aviation Services, and Axens, the technology licensor, made this announcement on the sidelines of the Conference of the Parties (COP28).
The “synthetic paraffinic kerosene” route was certified by the International Air Transport Association in 2016 as meeting international standards for aviation fuel. While the list of specified alcoholic substances does not include methanol. The flight, which used aviation fuel made from a blend of olefin compounds, will help validate the new path to producing sustainable aviation fuel from methanol.
With the possibility of relying on electricity generated from renewable energy, the new path might lead to the production of sustainable green jet fuel, which is a key factor in meeting the challenge of producing sustainable jet fuel to reduce emissions in the aviation sector.
On this occasion, Mohammed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, said: “The path announced today for sustainable aviation fuel represents an important step on the path towards a more sustainable future in the aviation sector. This test flight reflects the shared goals of Masdar and Total Energy, which aim to enhance reliance on sustainable aviation fuel and provide another option that supports the ongoing efforts to decarbonize the aviation sector. Sustainable aviation fuel has great potential to reduce carbon emissions in the emissions-intensive aviation sector, and Masdar is proud to contribute to the development and growth of this sector, and we are committed to establishing many strategic partnerships in this field.”
For his part, Patrick Pouyanne, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Total Energy, said: “We are pleased to cooperate with (Masdar) in conducting this successful test, as our common goals as companies operating in the energy and sustainability sectors revolve around working to develop the next generation of fuel.” Clean aviation that can complement sustainable aviation fuel currently produced from waste cooking oil. This new path to producing sustainable fuel to power jet aircraft is an important step that supports efforts to decarbonize the aviation sector.”
Sustainable aviation fuel represents an immediately available solution to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions within the air transport sector. It can be used as a turnkey fuel without the need to modify existing storage and refueling infrastructure, aircraft, or engines.
The gradual adoption of these solutions contributes to reducing carbon emissions from air transport by a significant amount, as on average, biojet fuel can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80% during the various stages of production, when it is manufactured from waste and residues. Sustainable green jet fuel is a synthetic fuel derived from renewable energy sources, compatible with jet engines and a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
