In the US, a 64-year-old man’s tongue turned green and “hairy” following taking antibiotics. Information regarding this appeared in The New England Journal of Medicine.
The man drank a course of clindamycin, which was prescribed to him by a dentist. After that, “hair” appeared on his tongue: the papillae lengthened, increased and acquired a green tint. The patient did not complain of pain or discomfort.
Doctors believe hairy tongue syndrome is generally harmless. Smoking, dry mouth, dehydration, poor oral hygiene, and taking certain medications can all lead to an unusual problem. Doctors recommended that the man scrape his tongue with a special brush, and six months later the “hair” was gone.
