Greeks chose stability over drama – Mitsotakis deserves a second term

“Greek voters have decided, by an overwhelming margin, that they prefer stability and technocratic ability to dramas”, comments the “Economist” in the evaluation of the ballot box of May 21, even emphasizing that Kyriakos Mitsotakis is entitled to a second term thanks to his work and after an “impressive” election result.

“Mr. Mitsotakis deserves it. For the last four years he has governed, for the most part, with great energy and ability. The country’s economy has recovered better than most countries from the suffering caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the crisis in energy prices, the growth rate of the Greek economy last year was about twice the eurozone average and is projected to comfortably surpass this year as well”, the well-known financial magazine says in an article.

The “Economist” notes that now Greek bond yields are already on a par with investment-grade debt yields, which reflects market confidence.

“Greece, in short, has become a normal country, not a hotbed of concern. Apart from the economy, Mr. Mitsotakis has wisely managed the tensions with Turkey. The immediate dispatch of aid to southeastern Turkey in February, when the country was hit by the devastating earthquakes, also contributed to this,” the publication points out.

The article also dwells on the unexpectedly heavy defeat of SYRIZA, by a margin of almost 21 points. “It’s one thing to beat your political opponent, another to defeat him, and another what Kyriakos Mitsotakis did to Alexis Tsipras on May 21,” the “Economist” reports, adding that the lead of New Democracy proved to be clearly greater than that of a difference of the order of “six or seven points” predicted by polling companies.

“The future of Mr. Tsipras and his party is now in doubt,” comments the magazine, recalling that under the SYRIZA government “Greece came close to going bankrupt, exiting the euro and threatening the stability of the entire eurozone.” “Then Mr. Mitsotakis took over,” he adds.

In his assessment, the “Economist” underlines that Greece is still facing challenges, which were highlighted, among others, by the tragic train accident in Tempi, however, he emphasizes that with his performance, Kyriakos Mitsotakis has won a second four-year term in order to continue the his work.

“There is still a long way to go in the mission of modernizing the Greek state – and Mr. Mitsotakis will have a lot of work to do in a second term. But, it is clear that she deserves it”, concludes the “Economist”.
