ATHENS (AP) — Greek officials did not go to work Thursday due to a 24-hour strike that paralyzed public transportation and left ferries tied up in port.

Public sector unions called the strike to demand the withdrawal of the labor law which, according to the government, will increase the flexibility of the labor market. The unions consider that the new legislation is an attack on their rights.

The metro in the capital, Athens, will remain closed for the duration of the strike, while the city’s trams and buses will offer partial service. Doctors and nurses, in addition to some teachers, also supported the strike.

The airports were operating normally following the participation of air traffic controllers in the strike was considered illegal.

Hundreds of striking workers marched through central Athens in two separate demonstrations. The closure of roads due to the mobilizations and the interruption of public transportation collapsed traffic in the capital.
