Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
The American election was at the center of their discussion.
Regardless of the outcome, Greek-American relations are strategic and their content will not be affected, stressed Mr. Mitsotakis in view of the American election, addressing the lady Sakellaropoulou.
“Again, regardless of the result, the geopolitical coming of age of Europe becomes absolutely necessary. On the occasion of the Draghi report, the time has come for Europe to think about how it can cover the ground lost by the US and China by launching policies that should get off the beaten path”, noted Mr. Mitsotakis. .
As the prime minister pointed out, “the intense polarization and toxicity observed in the US is a problem in itself for our democracies. In the Republic we are rivals, but never enemies.”
“Democracy provides for respect for the opinion of others and the confrontation of plans and opinions, but because Greece has paid for the toxicity of public dialogue, we must keep in mind that democracy is strengthened without toxicity and unnecessary objections”, he added.
At the same time, according to newsit, Mr. Mitsotakis also informed Mrs. Sakellaropoulou about the filing for consultation of two bills concerning the new tax bill and the new way of calculating the minimum wage from 2028.
“It includes significant tax cuts for 2025. We are geared towards reducing taxes as the economy grows and we are fighting the scourge of tax evasion and I say this because in many European countries governments are going the opposite way. From now on, the focus is on the middle class when it comes to reducing taxes,” he said.
Regarding the bill for the new way of calculating the minimum wage, Mr. Mitsotakis stated that it will contain the explicit commitment that it will not be reduced, adding that “we remain committed to an increase of 950 euros in the minimum wage until 2027.”

**Interview with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Greek-American Relations and European Geopolitics**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us, Prime Minister Mitsotakis. During your recent meeting with President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, it was noted that the American elections were a significant topic. Can you elaborate on how you see the outcome of these elections affecting Greek-American relations?
**Mitsotakis:** Thank you for having me. I emphasized during our discussion that regardless of the election outcome in the U.S., the strategic bonds between Greece and America are strong and will remain unchanged. Our shared democratic values and mutual interests are fundamentally embedded in our relationship.
**Editor:** You also mentioned the need for Europe to adapt in light of the shifting geopolitical landscape. Can you explain what you mean by the “geopolitical coming of age of Europe”?
**Mitsotakis:** Absolutely. The Draghi report highlights a crucial moment for Europe to reevaluate its position on the global stage, particularly in relation to the influence of the U.S. and China. Europe must explore proactive policies that allow it to regain lost ground and assert itself as a geopolitical player. It’s about moving beyond traditional approaches and embracing innovative strategies that reflect our collective European values.
**Editor:** You mentioned the polarization in U.S. politics being a concern. How do you believe this impacts democracies internationally, including Greece?
**Mitsotakis:** The intense polarization and toxicity we observe in American politics serve as a cautionary tale for all democracies. It’s essential to remember that in a democratic republic, while we may be rivals, we are never enemies. Such division can erode trust in institutions and undermine democratic processes. We must aim to foster dialogue and mutual respect in our democracies to avoid similar pitfalls.
**Editor:** In closing, what do you hope to achieve in terms of enhancing Greece’s role in Europe’s geopolitical strategy moving forward?
**Mitsotakis:** My goal is to ensure that Greece becomes a pivotal player in shaping a unified and proactive European strategy. This involves collaborating closely with our European partners to address shared challenges and to create a stronger, more resilient Europe that can stand its ground on the world stage. Our capacity for collaboration and innovation will determine our future success.
**Editor:** Thank you, Prime Minister Mitsotakis, for your insights on these important issues.
