There is intense interest in the British media for the “Rodos Week” platform, through which guests who were displaced from their hotels in Rhodes due to the big fire last July can secure a free stay for up to seven days in a hotel of a similar category.

According to British media, at least 5,000 interested parties have already registered to claim the voucher worth up to 500 euros, which shows the particularly great interest in holidays in Rhodes – despite the fires – and in Greece in general, while demand is expected to increase the next months.

In many publications it is noted that this is the first case in the world where a country offers this type of compensation to travelers affected by a natural disaster.

“From this week, thousands of British holidaymakers are entitled to compensation, as Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis promised last year,” reports the “Independent”, referring to the large information campaign carried out last year by the Greek government, especially in the British market, in order to ensure that visitors who were unable to enjoy their holiday due to the fires would have a strong incentive to return under different circumstances to Knights Island.

Greece is “the first country in the world” to offer such a service, the general secretary of Tourism Policy and Development Myron Flouris noted to the “Guardian”, while many publications point out that there is no precedent for Greece’s choice to offer vouchers to those affected tourists.

“Greece is offering free holidays to Britons who were evacuated during the fires in Rhodes”, says an online publication “Mirror”. The same is the title of the “Daily Star”, while the “Sun” in the title has the pun “Isle be there”, wanting to say “I will be on the island”. “Greece gives vouchers for hotels to those who moved away from the fires”, writes the BBC. Similar texts exist on many other sites.

“”Rodos Week” is the idea of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and hoteliers in Rhodes,” the Daily Mail website states, which recalls that a large part of the travelers who were forced to leave their rooms last summer were British and that the initiative was announced by Kyriakos Mitsotakis in a broadcast of the British television station ITV.

It is recalled that the beneficiaries of “Rodos Week” are all adults who stayed in Rhodes hotels that were vacated in July 2023. Those interested must submit their application to and can use the voucher either during the current spring season, until 31 May, or between October 1 and November 15. Depending on the category of the hotel and the type of room, 300 to 500 euros will be credited.

After the records of 2023, Greek tourism seems to have entered 2024 with acquired speed, as in January arrivals increased by 16% compared to the corresponding month of last year, while the average expenditure per trip was boosted by 9, 7%, according to data from the Bank of Greece.
