Since Sunday afternoon,a series of tremors,with the strongest registering 4.6 on the Richter scale, have shaken the island.

According to the Athens Geodynamic Institute, the powerful quake, which struck at 3:55 p.m. local time at a depth of 14 kilometers (9 miles), was followed by numerous tremors exceeding magnitude 4 and dozens registering magnitude 3. Despite the concerning tremors, thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries or meaningful damage. However, Greek authorities are taking the situation extremely seriously.

A meeting convened Monday brought together officials from the Ministry of Climate Crisis and civil Protection,fire service representatives,and seismologists to assess the situation. As a precautionary measure, schools on Santorini, along with neighboring islands of Amorgos, Anafi, and Ios, have been temporarily closed.

Adding to the safety measures,authorities issued a directive to residents and hotel owners to drain their swimming pools. The concern is that the water could destabilize structures in the event of a stronger earthquake. “Expert advice to residents and hotel owners in Santorini: Drain your swimming pools,” stated the Civil Protection ministry, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

A contingent of firefighters, equipped with a canine search-and-rescue team, was dispatched to Santorini on Saturday, followed by additional teams on Sunday. These teams have established temporary camps in open areas, ready to provide immediate assistance if needed.

Island residents have been advised to avoid large gatherings and open-air events, exercising caution while traversing the islands, especially on cliffs and slopes, as the risk of rockfalls is heightened.

While experts cannot predict with certainty whether a larger earthquake will occur, they acknowledge the potential for a 6-magnitude quake in the region. Adding another layer of complexity is the seismic activity within Santorini’s submerged volcano caldera. As September, several minor earthquakes have been recorded within the caldera.The strongest of these, a 3.8 magnitude tremor, occurred on January 25th. However, activity within the caldera has reportedly subsided since then.
