Greece hit by 5.0 magnitude earthquake

A 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck central Greece on Tuesday evening, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said, with residents saying they felt it as far away as the capital Athens.

The earthquake occurred at 20:06 GMT and its epicenter was located 57 km northeast of Athens, according to CSEM.

The tremor was felt in the capital, witnesses said. A previous earthquake of magnitude 4.7 on the Richter scale had already been felt earlier in the day on the island of Euboea, also northeast of Athens.

Old buildings were damaged and schools were closed as a precaution.
