Asuncion, IP Agency.- The U23 team defeated Israel 4-2 in the second round of Group D at the Paris Olympic Games and remains in with a chance of advancing to the next round.
Paraguay started off winning with a goal from outside the six-yard box by Marcelo Fernández and finished the first half dominating the match.
In the second half, Israel showed more position and ended up tying the game at ’53. Julio Enciso, with an outstanding performance, put the Albirroja ahead again until Oscar Glouck tied the score again for the Asian team, after the rebound of a penalty saved by Gatito Fernández.
With the equalizer in the 80th minute, Paraguay continued to search for its first victory in Paris 2024 and finally arrived with Fabián Balbuena’s goal in the 93rd minute and Marcelo Fernández scored the second on a counterattack with a ball stolen from the Israeli defense.
Paraguay won its first game after a tough 5-0 defeat against Japan at the start of the Olympics and is preparing for its last match in the group stage and the search for a place in the next phase. It will be this Tuesday, July 30, against Mali at 3:00 p.m. (Paraguayan time).
